JOSHUA BENTLEY ARTIST STATEMENT:

“METAMORPHOSIS”

This body of work culminates over 10 years of exploration and growth as an artist. My work is primarily driven by a sense of exploration and experimentation and rarely planned out ahead of time. I’m drawn to a wide range of subject matter but particularly interested in painting and drawing people. The portraits and figures I paint often invoke ideas of spirituality and invite the viewer to derive meanings based on their own introspection and spiritual intuitions. Many of the abstract works are similarly inspired by ideas of personal expression and invoking personal feelings.

Also included in this brief retrospective are illustrations, sketches, mixed-media, and various other art experiments that have been critical exercises in my metamorphosis from an IT specialist to full time artist.

Artist Bio

Kent native Joshua Bentley abandoned an IT career in 2010 to pursue life as an artist and has never looked back. He graduated from Kent State in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Joshua sells work internationally and has exhibited his art throughout northeast Ohio in Kent, Akron, and Cleveland as well as NYC and Houston.

He is a multidisciplinary artist and has worked professionally in several fields and art mediums such as commercial illustration (beverage label art, book cover art, fantasy art, and stage production backdrops). He has also painted several murals in Cleveland, Kent, and Suffield.

He has lived and traveled all over the US and is currently making art and music in Kent while co-curating the FJ Kluth Art Gallery.
