DESCRIPTION:

    The Mantis Gallery was an art and music venue that existed next to Standing Rock Cultural Arts at 257 N. Water St. in Downtown Kent,Ohio from 1996-2005.  It was a DIY place that host ed hundreds of bands from all over the world and all different genres, but mainly punk rock music.  The venue was created by local house painter Sam Ludwig who has been in countless bands in Kent since the early 1980's.

   With the help of Jimi Imij of The Ohio Hystairical Musick Society, we were able to put together a show of posters and photos from the era. It was also a space for art shows, poetry readings,performance art installations, and children’s theatre.  

    The place eventually became a series of other music related businesses including TurnUp Records until the building was deemed unfit for public or private use in 2013.   Recently, Lucci’s Bar owners did a major renovation and opened up in 2022 as a place for musical and social gatherings.  Lucci’s closed earlier this year and the space waits for it’s next incarnation.
