ABOUT “BIRDSONG”

RUNTIME:  54minutes.

COUNTRY:  Ireland.

YEAR: 2024

“Birdsong” is a documentary film directed by Kathleen Harris and produced by Ross Whitaker and Aideen O’Sullivan for True Films.

This sensitive and beautifully made film follows Irish ornithologist and field recordist Seán Ronayne during a project to sound-record all of the bird species in Ireland, both resident and migratory. There is a lot more than that to absorb in this beautiful piece of art in motion.

It’s likely impossible to not be moved from the opening scene, where the musical score, cinematography, and artistic direction immediately establish a caring relationship between the birds (portrayed with sound and image) and Seán Ronayne, who appears lit by golden sunlight...

Nóouhàh-Toka’na, known as swift fox in English, once roamed the North American Great Plains from Canada to Texas. Like bison, pronghorn and other plains animals, Nóouhàh-Toka’na held cultural significance for the Native Americans who lived alongside them. But predator control programs in the mid-1900s reduced the foxes to just10 percent of their native range.

At the Fort Belknap Indian Community in Montana, members of the Aaniiih and Nakoda tribes are working with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and other conservation partners to restore biodiversity and return Nóouhàh-Toka’na to the land.
