Artist Statement

My recent work is a deviation from the figurative paintings I’ve done in the past; the paintings and batiks I make now are freer. The process of creating the black and white birds in gouache begins with a blind contour drawing. I then build upon whatever’s been created by adding value, texture, and pattern. They are a juxtaposition of letting go and tightly rendering.

The batiks similarly have elements that are somewhat out of my control: Wax seeps, drips, and cracks, and dye washes are sometimes different than expected. Theprocess begins with a color scheme and, most recently, a scene I’d like to suggest. The landscape pieces are inspired by a recent back packing trip on the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada.

It feels good to let go of certain elements in the creation process, and it’s exciting to work with what emerges. For me, these works represent a shift to freedom of process and the exploration of new materials.
