OAC Grant Announcement:

Standing Rock Cultural Arts receives two Ohio Arts Council Grants for 2008.

Standing Rock Cultural Arts is proud to announce that we have received
an Arts Innovation Grant and a Sustainability Grant from the Ohio Arts
Council for our operations and programming in 2008.

The Arts Innovation Grant will help cover expenses for The "Who's Your Mama?" Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival to take place throughout Portage County, from April 16th-20th, 2008. Standing Rock Cultural Arts ranked in the top 10% of arts organizations throughout Ohio.

This is what the OAC Panel said in their evaluation of our application:

a. a solid, grassroots art center
b. festival includes earth-friendly technology and arts
c. credible past record with partnerships in arts programming
d. new partnerships are innovative
e. fantastic letters of support
f. lots of great ideas but not much detail
g. project is innovative; takes artwork into the community
i. great track record interacting with kids

Why the OAC Supports the Arts Innovation Program

The Ohio Arts Council believes that state tax dollars invested in
ground-breaking arts activities invigorate Ohio communities and broaden
access to arts experiences for all Ohioans.

Exploration, invention and originality are core values central to Ohio
and to the arts themselves. Our new discoveries, new directions and new
attitudes challenge us and enable us to grow as a society. Without
continuous innovation, the arts in Ohio’s communities would stagnate and
the tremendous creative capital we as Ohioans possess would wither and
die out.

By developing inventive entry points for Ohioans to experience the arts,
we create new value for communities and greater meaning for arts
organizations. By daring ourselves to both deviate from yesterday’s
norms and pioneer tomorrow’s transformations, we keep Ohio’s arts and
culture relevant and dynamic.

Arts Innovation grant funds should be seen as investments in Ohio’s
communities and a means to strengthen participation in the arts by all
Ohioans. By providing a funding category that rewards innovative
thinking about the arts and community participation, the Ohio Arts
Council stimulates arts organizations to grow and evolve and to deliver
more relevant services to their constituents.

Standing Rock Cultural Arts is also grateful to the OAC for the
Sustainability Grant we received for 2008. This grant will help us cover
our operating expenses for the year.

Why the OAC Supports the Sustainability Program

The arts play an important role in the lives of every Ohio citizen. All
communities benefit from participating, experiencing, sharing and
learning through the arts. The Ohio Arts Council has consistently taken
a leadership role in developing creative ways to make the arts available
throughout the state. The OAC pioneered general operating support for
arts organizations beginning in 1978.

Funding from this program supports organizations that provide essential
arts programming to their community and are integral to its cultural
legacy. Through our direct financial support of ongoing programming by
arts, non-arts and cultural
organizations, the OAC sustains the vitality of Ohio economically,
educationally and culturally.

The Sustainability program allows organizations to plan and conduct
ongoing arts programs—either a full year of activities or recurring
projects—in both traditional spaces (galleries, concert halls, theaters,
museums) and nontraditional venues (hospitals, shopping malls,
retirement centers, places of worship).

Standing Rock Cultural Arts would like to congratulate Edwin George on receiving an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council in 2005. This fellowshiprecognizes artists of exceptional quality and rewards them for past work. Only around 8% of those who apply receive grants.

State Representative Kathleen Chandler recently stopped by The North Water Street Gallery in Kent to congratulate Edwin George on receiving a 2005 Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship. Edwin is one of Ohio's leading folk artists and currently resides in Kent.

Edwin is a full blooded Eastern Band Cherokee whose paintings tell stories that relate to his Native American ancestry. He is available for storytelling to any group and especially enjoys relating to children. He currently resides in Kent, Ohio.

Standing Rock would also like to acknowledge the significance of Edwin's work because t provides such a wealth of experience to our community; educationally, culturally and economically.

Edwin is especially honored and would like to offer sincere apprection for those in public office who work to support the Arts.
