About the Exhibit

The title for the show is “In the Garden.” I like the idea of garden as
well as digging my hands into the soil. Garden conjures up the sense of
paradises found and lost, as well an intimate sense of nature. Gardens
are an enormous amount of work. Sometimes they are a battle, often they
are a personal refuge. A chance to cease speaking. The ceramic
sculptures in this show are not depictions of plants, but rather of
animals, domestic and wild, and of Madonnas. My understanding of garden
not only encompasses what particular plants grow in the garden, but all
the life within and surrounding it.

MARY GILMORE BIOGRAPHY

Mary Gilmore is an artist and educator. She has a M.F.A from East
Tennessee State University, and a B.F.A and a BS. Ed. from Kent State
University. Working primarily as a sculptor, Mary has produced work in
ceramic, performance, and installation. She is currently an elementary
art teacher for East Holmes Local School District. Mary lives with her
husband and daughter in an old farmhouse with a large garden in the
Killbuck Valley.
